        Buenos Aires has many art galleries and exhibition spaces, the majority of which are in Retiro, Barrio Norte, Centro (downtown) and Recoleta.  The most visited galleries are the Proa Foundation in La Boca neighborhood; the Recoleta Cultural Center; and the Palais de Glace, which is also the venue of the National Room.

        Buenos Aires' cultural centers benefit their artists and public equally. These spaces allow artists and the public to discuss and create projects or works based often on controversial subjects, performances, workshops, film screenings, and classes are often offered.

        Throughout the year, Buenos Aires offers several nation-wide festivals reflecting religious, cultural or festive agendas. Many of these festivals encourage and include public participation, open to all of Buenos Aires' residents and tourists.

Milonga and Tango

        Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango, a song and dance form which originated in the late 19th century, as a fusion of European and African music.  Many milongas and dance halls offer one to two hour classes for students of differing levels. It is ideal to commit to at least five classes, at minumim to learn the basic steps and frame/position of the dance. There are also halls which offer a dinner-show option, as well.

Museums

        The most significant museums and cultural centers throughout the country are found in Buenos Aires, rivaling museums throughout Latin America.  The most notable museums are: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Centro Cultural Recoleta, Palais de Glace, Sala Nacional de Exhibiciones, Museo de Arte Latinoamericana de Buenos Aires (MALBA), and Fundacion Proa, among others.  Visiting Buenos Aires' museums is a wonderful way to revisit the history of Argentina and to learn of Argentine lifestyles and society, through testimonies, customs, and Buenos Aires itself.

        Buenos Aires has a very active theater scene, ranging from classic theater, improvisation, and comedy, to Playbill theater. Shows are presented in various areas of the city, the most recognized, being Avenida Corrientes, while independent shows are performed in Palermo and San Telmo.  Buenos Aires has more than sixty theaters, the majority of which are located on Avenida Corrientes, the epicenter of theater activity within the city, offering popular shows, musicals, comedies, and theater adaptations.
